O’Sullivans has a storied history, tracing its roots back to 1895 when it first opened its doors as an apothecary. Serving the people of Waterford City, it was a place of wonder, offering handcrafted perfumes, potions, and remedies to cure ailments and captivate the senses.
That same year, 1895, marked a momentous occasion in Irish history—the arrival of the first motorised vehicle. A photograph taken from the old Imperial Hotel immortalised this event, capturing the bustling streets of Waterford City with the iconic O’Sullivan’s Apothecary shopfront proudly on display.
Our Building
Our building stands proudly alongside the historic city walls of Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland, with a legacy spanning over 1,000 years. Constructed parallel to Waterford’s first street, The Mall, our property boasts a quirky charm, with not a single square wall to be found. This distinctive shape enhances its character and reflects its rich heritage.
Crafted from antique brick and salvaged stone from the original city, the building itself is a testament to expert restoration. Its history whispers through every corner, seamlessly blending past and present.
In 1895, the first motorized vehicle arrived in Ireland, and a photograph taken from the old Imperial Hotel captured this historic moment. The image prominently features our shopfront, then trading as O’Sullivan’s Apothecary, a beloved establishment offering handcrafted perfumes, potions, and remedies.
Now, in a beautifully restored space, we honor this legacy. Over a century later, we’ve breathed new life into this historic building, creating a space for all to enjoy—an enduring tribute to the spirit of Waterford City.
